Set A Commedia masks

The Merchant of Venice

by William Shakespeare
Directed by Ellen Geer

June 3rd ~ October 1

Written by Shakespeare in the late 1500s, this play reflects the culture of its time. Every character embodies elements of hatred and intolerance, from the wealthy privileged Christians to the wealthy immigrant Jew, Shylock, confined to a ghetto. His daughter steals his money and elopes with a Christian to find a better life. Shylock has lost his daughter and his money, so what is left? “Why, revenge! The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.” The wealthy Christians strip Shylock of all he owns. Intolerance and revenge continue today as we resist and struggle in search of equality and social justice.
